Bollywood Actor Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan the BIG ‘B’ of Bollywood.

“Star of the Millenium” that’s the title they gave him in 2000…Wanna know why??? A sneak-peak at the life of the ‘Bollywood heart-throb’.

GROWING UP:

Amitabh Bachchan was born on the 11th October, 1942  in Allahabad-Uttar Pradesh. Amitabh’s father was Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan a well known poet of his time. His mother was Teji Bachchan from Faisalabad.  Amitabh is the older of 2 sons. He has a younger brother named Ajitabh.

You could say that Amitabh gets his acting streak from his mother. She had a keen interest in theatre back in the day, however, when offered a role in a film, she declined and preferred being a stay-at-home mum. She was quite pursuent of Amitabh taking center stage whenever he could.

The famous actor’s  brother Ajitabh married to Ramola, reside in London. Ajitabh however, has not taken to the film industry.

Amitabh schooled at Allahabad’s Jnana Prabodhini Boys’ High School (BHS), and went to college at Nainital’s Sherwood College, where he majored in the art stream.  Bachchan completed a Bachelor in Science Degree at the Kirori Mal College of the University of Delhi.  The Bachchan family had close relations to the ‘Gandhi family’ .

LEAVING HOME

Amitabh started out as a ‘freight broker’ in a shipping co. in Calcutta (now Kolkata). Moving onto Mumbai Amitabh made his debut in 1969 in the movie Saat Hindustani, a film directed by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas featuring Utpal Dutt, Madhu and Jalal Agha.  This movie did not make a success financially but it did bring Bachchan the “ Best Newcomer Award”.

Tha Big B continued to act in movies that were successes in their time. The bollywood actor met his wife ‘Jaya Bhaduri’ on the sets of ‘Guddi’. The duo acted in several movies together and their chemistry on screen was amazing. A lot of critics seem to think that Jaya paved the way for Amitabh’s stardom as she was a good actress and had been in the industry before him.

Amitabh and Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi were close friends. In 1984 Amitabh took a break from acting and entered politics and won a seat in the 8th Lok Sabha (equivalent to the ‘House of Commons’). The bollywood star however, could not withstand the corruption and red-tape within the office and resigned within 3 years.

ACTING CAREER

Amitabh’s acting career didn’t have a good start, he wasn’t the best face for the screen in his time and was rejected based on his skin colour. The directors back then, preferred light-skinned actors. As luck would have it, Big B’s deep baritone paved the way for him in cinema, he did voice overs & narrations for blockbuster movies and for various commercials. Until today people impersonate the Badshah of bollywood and his voice is one of a kind.  Amitabh Bachchan’s first movie was ‘Saat Hindustani’. The next movie that followed was ‘Anand’ and he won the ‘Best Supporting Actor Award’.  the rising bollywood star continued to bag movie awards for his performance over the years that followed.
Box office hits:   The term ‘Angry Young Man’ is given to the Big B because of his movie “Zanjeer” – directed by  Prakash Mehera and his co-star was his soon to be wife ‘Jaya Bhaduri’. They tied the knot after the release of the movie.   In July 1982, on the sets of ‘Coolie’, Amitabh suffered a massive spleen injury due to the stunts he was doing. Amitabh was hospitalized for a couple of months, and during this time the public was praying for him and offered to give up ‘limbs’- )(a hindu ritual of sacrifice)  to save him!!!!.  However, the superstar recovered and resumed work on the movie. The movie became a box office hit mainly due to the publicity of his injury.

Like most actors Amitabh has had his share of flops in the movies, in my opinion there were a few flops like ‘ Jadugar’, ‘Mrityudata’ Lalbadshah’ and the likes of them. Most of the flops revolved around bad scripts and characters.
PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS Amitabh Bachchan married Jaya Bhaduri in 1973.  They have 2 chilren, Shweta and Abhishek. Shweta is married and lives in Delhi with her 2 children. She is not into films.   Abhishek however, followed his parents league and entered the film industry. Abhishek tied the knot with “former MISS WORLD 1994″- Aishwarya Rai” on 20th April 2007.  Both Abhi and Aish are in the film industry and have made their way into Bollywood.

SCANDALS! about the mega star Amitabh Bachchan and his debonair personality onscreen and off-screen were far too many. Amitabh was often termed as the “ladies-man” by the media.  Famous link ups were with actress Rekha & late Parveen Bhabi were a common talk in the media world for several years.  I wouldn’t really blame the man for being linked or having affairs with strong and beautiful women, Amitabh has a charisma that not many women can resist even today - that’s usually what happens when you live the high-life!.

Amitabh was also linked to a ‘land owners’ case in his hometown and after several years in court has won the case.

AMITAB BACHCHAN’S SUCCESS I believe Amitabh should owe his success to his father and his wife.  He is a great actor and at the age of 68 if he can still play a lead role in films, says a lot about the man and his acting, no wonder they call him a ‘Mega Star’.  The Big B is regarded as a ‘God’ in most households in India due to his popularity & has been the face of the industry for as long as i can remember.

The pulic blogged about Bachchan’s role in endorsements and  some critics find it annoying that he would do so many commercials. They think Mr. Bachchan selling himself too hard.  At 68yrs some people believe he shouldn’t be making 5-6 movies a year.   The fact that he made his son’s wedding a national event, didn’t go down too well with some critics.

The Mega Star opened a production house “ABCL” in 2006 that flopped and cost the actor more than half his life’s earnings. Amitabh moved on to television programs and hosted the show “ Kaun Banega Crorepati” (KBC)– a version of “ Who wants to be a Millionaire?”. This was to counteract the losses he had incurred with his production house.

The actor and his wife live in Mumbai in the suburban district of Juhu. The name of their high security bungalow is “Prateeksha”- meaning “the Wait” .  According  ‘Forbes listing’ the bollywood heart throb is the 2nd highest Tax payer, and it stated that Amitabh was upset with the listing as he should’ve been the 1st on the list.

Amitabh Bachchan is the brand ambassador for the CWG (Common Wealth Games).  Big B supported the ‘Diabetes Detection Van’ in Leicester in 2007 while on the ‘Unforgettable tour’ in the UK. This was  also supported by Keith Vaz the labour MP who is of Indian origin.

Besides being given the title of the “Star of the Millenium”  the mega star of bollywood was given the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ in 2009 at the Asian Award Ceremony.  Quite a few books have been written about the actor, and his wife Jaya is on her 2nd book about her husband.

“Rishte mein hum tumhare baap lagte hain, naam hai Shehenshah!!!!”(A famous line from the movie “Badshah”) in some ways i call him the Indian ‘James Bond’.

This sums it up for the Mega star of bollywood, he is the greatest star that lives today and I wish him good health and success!
