American Actress Marg Helgenberger

without comments

EARLY LIFE
Marg Helgenberger was born on November 16, 1958, in Freemont, Nebraska. She’s the second daughter of Mary Kay,  a nurse, and Hugh Helgenberger who was a meat inspector but died in 1986 of complications from Multiple Sclerosis. She has an elder sister, Ann, whose career is as a jazz musician, and a younger brother, Curt, who works as a meat inspector like their father.

Marg Helgenberger

Marg’s initial interest was to become a nurse like her mom, but when she went to college at Kearney State College (now the University of Nebraska), her interest turned to the media world. She also attended Northwestern University school of speech in Evanston, Illinois to get her B.S. degree in Speech and Drama. She then moved to New York.

THE BEGINNING OF HER ACTING CAREER
She started her acting in college productions at Northwestern University. Her first role was on a soap opera called “Ryan’s Hope” as a tough young policewoman from 1975 until 1979. When she moved to Southern California, she became a guest star television on various TV series such as “Matlock”, “Thirty Something”, “Tales From the Crypt”, and the short-lived series “Shell Game” in 1987.

BIG BREAKS
Her role as Karen Charlene “K.C.” Koloski, a tough prostitute, in drama “China Beach“ won her amazing awards. She won Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (China Beach) for three years straight from 1989 to 1991, and an Emmy Award in 1990 as Outstanding Supporting Actress in Drama Series (China Beach).
She started her cast as Catherine Willows, a blood spatter analyst (2000 – present), in “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” and in this series, she won a Screen Actor Guild Award as The Cast of Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series (CSI), two People’s Choice Award as a Favorite Female TV Star (CSI) and as The Cast of Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series (CSI) all in the year of 2005. The awards are of course the results of her hard work. She went so far as to learn the real things to do and even witnessed autopsies that were being performed at the time.

Due to her achievements, her hometown of North Bend, Nebraska, renamed the street of her childhood home to “Helgenberger Avenue” in mid 2006.

PRIVATE LIFE
She was married to Alan Rosenberg in 1989 and gave birth to Hugh Howard Rosenberg who was named after her late father.

Due to Marg’s mother’s struggle against breast cancer for the last 27 years and her survival, she and Alan decided to get involved in the fight against breast cancer and started an annual “Marg and Alan’s Celebrity Weekend” in Omaha, Nebraska in 1997. The event is held for 3 days per each year and usually includes a two-day celebrity golf tournament at Dodge Riverside Golf Club and a cancer-survivor celebration at Harrah’s Casino.

Her marriage to Alan did not last forever. They separated in 2008 and finally divorced in 2010.

GROWING UP

The second of three children, McMahon went through a rebellious teenage stage until he joined the Law Course at Sydney University.  Later, he dropped out to pursue a modeling career.

ACTING CAREER

Before he began his acting career on Australian television on The Power, The Passion (89’) and Home and Away, McMahon travelled from one capital of fashion to another modeling in Los Angeles, New York, Milan, Rome, and Paris. He became famous for his appearances in commercial spots such as ads for Levi Strauss’ jeans.

Then he moved to the United States. After he studied with an accent coach, Julian made his début in Wet and Wild Summer! (92’) by Maurice Murphy and co- starring Christopher Atkins. Next he appeared in Dannii Minogue’s videoclips This Is It and This Is The Way (93’).

SUCCESS

The superlative role of Dr. Troy in Nip/Tuck led McMahon to gain many nominations, including the Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Television Series – Drama, in 2005, and an International Award. He was cast, in 2005, as the super-villain Dr. Doom in Fantastic Four by T. Story opposite Jessica Alba and Chris Evans. The film was a box office success and McMahon starred in its sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (07’) receiving two Teen Choice Award nominations both as rumble and villain movie choices.

PERSONAL LIFE

Loving and generous in his relationships, McMahon was married two times. The first, with Dannii Minogue, sister of the Pop princess Kylie, whom he met while shooting Home and Away.  The second, to the unprejudiced actress Brooke Burns from Baywatch.  McMahon and Burns have a child named Madison and despite being divorced, remain on good terms.

Off-screen McMahon spends his time collecting classic books and watching rugby, baseball and football. He also likes to play sports and cook, especially roasts, pastas and ethnic cuisine. His favorite places are New York, the coast of Italy, England and Australia.

His next role will be in the film Bait (Sep. 2011), by Russell Mulcahy, wherein sharks seem to rule the roost. Everyone for themselves!

Teach English Abroad

The Road to Bali

As I write this I am preparing to leave Bali after the most amazing 6 weeks volunteering for the London Academy of Film TV and Media on their volunteer teaching programme.

My role here has been to teach English pronunciation to people who work in the local hotels with the aim of improving their public speaking skills, raising their confidence and improving their pronunciation. That in itself has been a rewarding, challenging and fun filled experience.  And alongside that there has been time enough to hit the beach for swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing (sun-burning!), visiting temples and waterfalls, seeing dolphins and manta rays, cycling, rafting and many other exciting and exhilarating experiences.

I have been a teacher for ten years at Suffolk New College in Ipswich. My background is in media production and radio production specifically so teaching pronunciation was very new to me. I was a little apprehensive but Andy Parkin the project manager was able to provide lots of support, ideas and resources for the course.  Teaching takes place over 3 or 4 mornings from 8.30 to 11.30 and included in that time  is a short tea break (yummy snacks provided!)

I was teaching in 3 lovely hotels, The Harris in Kuta,  The Risata also in Kuta and the Intercontinental which is closer to home in Jimbaran.  Teaching really was an absolute pleasure; the Balinese people are truly some of the friendliest and most humorous people I have ever encountered. They are quick to laugh and tease, but are keen to learn and apply themselves.  There are set formats for the lessons but being innovative within the sessions is part of the challenge, as is trying to tailor the teaching to the needs and abilities of the students. Give it your all and you will be rewarded by their gratitude and genuine affection.

Home while you are in Bali, is a gorgeous villa with Andy and his family, complete with gym and swimming pool.  You have your own room with en suite toilet and shower and are in a prime position to explore the southern peninsula which includes amazing beaches like Jimbaran and Dreamlands, Padang Padang or Nusa Dua;or visit the famous  temple at Uluwatu but watch out for the monkeys!

You can also easily get to other places in the island, I saw Dolphins in Lovina ( if you don’t want to wake up at 3am go there for a weekend, it’s quiet but nice) and spent a really rewarding few days in Ubud, the cultural centre of Bali. I also crammed in a visit to Nusa Lembongan a gem of an island just off the South East coast of Bali.  Or if you want to just stay home and chill out.

I particularly enjoyed spending time with Andy’s family and will miss them and the children terribly, but that, along with everything else, just means I will have to come back and enjoy yet more fabulous fun times in beautiful Bali. Thanks Andy and Ayu for making me feel so at home and giving me the chance to really explore Balinese culture and life! Terima kasih!
