This comedy film, produced by Walt Disney Productions was Michael’s debut film. It revolves around a genius, Leon (played by Alan Solomon) who has planned the ultimate night-long scavenger hunt. He picks 5 college students to participate. Although they are reluctant at first, they are soon racing around Los Angeles to solve clues. The scavenger hunt eventually brings everybody to the Westin Bonaventure Hotel where they have a huge party. Michael plays Scott, the younger brother of one of the college students.
This worldwide blockbuster hit saw Michael play the most recognizable character of his entire career, Marty McFly. Marty is a typical teenager in 1985; he has a dysfunctional family, his school attendance is lacking and he is picked on by bullies. He has a girlfriend, Jenny, and one true friend, the mad genius Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown (played by Christopher Lloyd). After receiving a message requesting help from Doc, he meets him to discover that he has built a time machine from a DeLorean. Marty is transported to 1955 where he must find the young Doc to help send him (Marty) back to 1985. However, he gets in the way of his teenage parents meeting and must make sure that they fall in love to ensure his own existence.
Michael plays teenage Scott Howard in this fantasy-comedy film. He is a struggling high school basketball player and can’t get the girl of his dreams to fall in love with him. However, he begins turning into a wolf and discovers that he is actually a human-wolf hybrid. Scott soon becomes the most popular kid in school and becomes the star of his basketball team. He even gets the girl of his dreams. The euphoria doesn’t last however as he is soon wishing that things could go back to normal. Teen Wolf also stars James Hampton who plays Scott’s dad Harold – another wolf.
Casualties of War marks one of the few movies where Michael played a dramatic role. He stars as Max Eriksson, a Vietnam veteran. Sean Penn plays Sergeant Tony Meserve who saved his life. Sent on a deployment to a village, Tony kidnaps a young Vietnamese girl to serve as his unit’s sex slave. She is tied to the post and is raped by all the men except Max. When he objects, he is ostracized from the rest of the unit. The girl is eventually killed and Max vows to get justice, much to the detriment of Tony and the rest of the unit. Michael won rave reviews for this performance.
This comedy horror film, directed by legendary Peter Jackson, was Michael’s last major film role. He plays Frank Bannister, an architect who lost his wife, Debra, in a car accident. After her death, he develops psychic abilities which allow him to see, hear and talk to ghosts. He befriends a few ghosts and convinces them to haunt a few houses around town. Frank then benefits from the hauntings by pretending to remove the ghosts in exchange for money. However, when a serial murderer comes back from Hell and starts killing again, Frank is forced to figure out how to get rid of ghosts for real.
