Rachel’s first major film role was in this comedy movie directed by Tom Hardy. She plays Jessica Spencer, a beautiful, popular, mean-spirited high school cheerleader. One day she steals an ancient pair of earrings from an occult store. The next day, she wakes up to discover that she has switched bodies with a 30-something year old petty criminal named Clive (played by Rob Schneider). Now Jessica must figure out how to get her body back. She needs to convince her best friends and boyfriend that she is really Jessica to enlist their help. However, Clive has other ideas and he begins a crime spree in Jessica’s body.
Despite having starred in The Hot Chick, it was this Tina Fey-written comedy that is considered to be Rachel’s breakout role. She plays Regina George, the head of the most popular girls in high school named the Plastics. Cady Heron (played by Lindsay Lohan), falls for Regina’s ex-boyfriend and Regina plots her social demise. Cady counters by vowing to bring down the Plastics by pretending to be one of them and turning them against each other. Also starring in this hilarious movie is Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert and Tina Fey.
This romantic movie catapulted Rachel into becoming Hollywood’s newest sweetheart and a bonafide A-list actress. It follows the story of two young lovers, Allie (played by Rachel) and Noah (played by Ryan Gosling) as told by an old man to an old woman in a nursing home. They fall madly in love but are separated by Allie’s family who disapproves of Noah. They eventually move her away as a last resort. While waiting for Noah to write for years, Allie meets and becomes engaged to Lon (played by James Marsden), a union that Allie’s family vehemently approves of. Meanwhile, it turns out that Noah has written to her every day. He finishes restoring an old house that the two of them once visited and appears in the newspaper. When Allie sees his picture, she goes and visits him and it is clear that they still love each other. She must then choose between her fiancé and her first love. Rachel and Ryan shared many rave reviews for their roles – even winning awards for Best Kiss and Best Romantic Couple. The movie even sparked a real life romance that lasted for a few years.
John (played by Owen Wilson) and Jeremy (played by Vince Vaughn), best friends and divorce lawyers, love crashing weddings in order to meet women for one-night stands. However, when they crash the biggest wedding in Washington by pretending to be brothers, John falls in love with Claire Cleary (played by Rachel), daughter of the United States Secretary of Treasury. Meanwhile, Jeremy hooks up with the youngest Cleary sister, Gloria (played by Isla Fisher) who invites Jeremy to spend the weekend with them at the family estate. John jumps at the chance to become closer to Claire despite her being engaged already and forces Jeremy to go. The weekend will prove to be their undoing however, as they both fall in love and their true identities are revealed.
Sherlock Holmes (played by Robert Downey Jr.) and Dr. Watson (played by Jude Law), have finally captured serial murderer and occult follower Lord Blackwood (played by Mark Strong). When he is hung for his crimes and declared dead, Sherlock and Dr. Watson breathe a sigh of relief. However, the relief is short-lived as it appears that Lord Blackwood has risen from the grave and has begun killing again. Sherlock is summoned by Scotland Yard to help with the investigation. However, he must first deal with the appearance of his former lover Irene Adler (played by Rachel) who has an agenda all of her own. The movie was a box office success and Rachel received rave reviews for her portrayal of Irene.
