Course outline

1 How to formulate your idea and identify your genre, outline, theme and log line.

2 Developing your ideas into a framework. The three act structure. The 'three dimensional' character.

3 Examine characters, their motivations and how they drive the story. Pacing and plotting techniques in a movie and individual scene construction.

4 Screenplay techniques and getting your work started, dialogue and sub text, creating mood, variety and heightening viewer interest.

5 Writer's workshop - Getting through the relationship between the screenplay, actors and director. In class assignment: the 'read through' of student work.

6 Motivation and the re-writes examine: the re-writing process and script polishing.

7 There will also be advice on writer motivation and problem solving as well as a broad overview of independent film making.

What happens during the course

Screen writing Students will also learn about film structure and how to develop their work into a professional screenplay format.

Students may bring an idea for a short movie, which they can complete as a screenplay within the course. All sessions are very practical in nature with class exercises throughout. There will also be 'in class' assignments'



By the end of the screen writing workshop screen writing students will have an understanding of the creative process in screen writing, be able to write a professional screenplay and have an overview of independent film making.
